1. Hatefrost is a project created under somewhat mysterious circumstances. You don't seek publicity, you don't provide details about the lineup, you're not on social media anywhere, yet you regularly release good material on physical formats for over 10 years. I'm all the more glad that you decided to give a few answers for Grim Chronicles, which makes our conversation truly unique.

Does Hatefrost intend to remain this inaccessible? Are you consciously rejecting platforms like Facebook and promotion on them?

B:

Hello... I think Hatefrost will remain where it is, which is underground and inaccessible as you wrote. Those who want to reach us will reach us... Yes, we're rejecting platforms like Facebook etc... although I know that labels promote our releases on Facebook, but that's no longer my concern.

2. Hatefrost is created by scene veterans. Only a few know who's behind it ;). You remember the old days, the 90s and the whole atmosphere surrounding black metal, so let's recall how it all looked? Young people know those times only from stories, and we operated underground without the internet. We learned about new releases from flyers and zines, and to listen to a new band or tape or record - we had to get the physical format. Currently we have streaming services and access to vast amounts of music with one click.

  • Don't these new times and technology kill the spirit of black metal? What were your beginnings of playing, contacts, trading and releasing music? Remind us of those old times in a few sentences.
  • Yes, they definitely kill the spirit of black metal, but there's one plus to these streaming services - that labels can promote their releases, and we can listen to the whole album to see if we like it, then buy the original later. I think people shouldn't be allowed to download the entire album from these streaming services, it should be blocked, but I don't know if that's how it works. I know that right now I might piss off young metalheads because they don't work and don't have money to buy an original, but I think those who work can easily afford to buy such an album.

The beginnings of playing, hehe, I remember like it was today when I was 18 years old (today I'm over 50), when I was buying my first guitar from a music pawn shop, hehehe... I didn't have money because I was still in school, so the guy from the pawn shop let me pay in installments, hehehe, so I had to figure out work and got myself paid internships to pay off the guitar, hehehe. Then looking for a rehearsal space, after recording some demo making the cover on xerox and sending it out and trading with other bands. Then I started an independent label as they say, and I remember like today sending an inquiry to the pressing plant about making a CD - prices were prohibitive back then and they'd only make you an album if you had registered business activity, so nothing came of it. I remember when we were releasing tapes with stickers on the cassette and printed inserts, that was a rarity back then, hehehe.

    3. Hatefrost is raw, cold black metal with furious vocals and solid sound. Reveal the project's beginnings - when and why did you decide to start Hatefrost and how did the first tracks come about? Was there any additional idea accompanying the creation of the name?

The beginnings date back to 2013, as I mentioned once in some interview, I started this project with another old maniac who's no longer with me in the band, but the first track was actually recorded with him for a compilation - Hate Generation dedicated to my long-time friend who is no longer alive. Then the project went dormant, other projects appeared etc., but later I decided to continue this creation and the first tracks were being formed in my head for some time already, then they were transferred to instruments and later everything took off following the Radically Anti-Christian stance!!!!!!!!!!!!

    4. I'll ask about the creative part. What's the recipe for creating raw black metal while maintaining authenticity and sincerity of the message? Where does the energy and power to create hateful music come from after all these years? What happens in your head when creating riffs/concepts for Hatefrost?

Recipe???? Hehe, this isn't cooking, heheheh, but seriously it's dedication to the idea and music straight from the heart that you feel, and all other factors like darkness, evil and hatred for everything holy, meaning total war with Judeo-Christianity!!!!!!! And of course inspirations - Norway in the 90s (DARKTHRONE - one of many inspirations, which can be heard in our music) and the Polish scene from the TTF period...

    5. How do you see Hatefrost in the future? Do you already have plans for next materials, or are they just being created? What can we expect from the project in the coming years?

In the near future there's supposed to be a split, then maybe we'll record a new MCD, the tracks are prepared, but for reasons beyond our control everything has to wait. What can we expect - nothing commercial or new really... Still old school all the way...

    6. Does the sacrifice you've made over the years for black metal make you a fulfilled person? Are you satisfied with your many years of activity?

I think so... I definitely fulfill myself playing music or dedicating myself to the label. I like finding new bands that are going in the right direction and helping them release a CD etc...

    7. You seem to be a self-sufficient person, not looking at trends, not forcefully seeking publicity and advertising - you just do your thing without looking at others. I'd call it a small success and a signpost for others that you can achieve a position on the scene without artificial promotion, Instagram photos and pedantic flaunting on social media.

What would you like to convey to new-wave black metal bands that often turn black metal into a circus and mockery in the name of popularity?

    Shortly... fuck off and die

    8. It's great that you agreed to give us a few concrete answers. We're creating a new webzine, and in the future maybe it will come out in paper version. We have a few solid people on the team so it looks promising...

Last question: How much does Hatefrost hate: the system, Christianity, mainstream, and posers in black metal?

    Thanks! Take care!

I also thank you for the time spent... Now I'll tell you, I appreciate the paper version much more, heheheheh, so I'm really rooting for you to release a paper version someday, because there are so few of these paper zines left, just a drop in the bucket... I think the answer to the last question was already given in the seventh question... March proudly under the banner of Antichrist!!!!!

    Thanks for everything...
